How to Frame Graded Pokémon Cards Without Damaging Them

The Golden Rule: Never Crack the Slab

A PSA slab is a tamper-evident, archival case. The moment it's cracked, the grade is gone and so is a significant chunk of the card's value. Any framing solution that requires opening the case is disqualified before you start.

Choose a Slab-Sized Interior

The safest frame is one that was built around the exact dimensions of a PSA slab (roughly 3.35" x 5.25" x 0.28"). A custom-fit interior means no shifting, no pressure on the label, and no need for foam wedges or tape.

Avoid Adhesives on the Case

Double-sided tape, mounting putty, and hot glue all leave residue on the polycarbonate shell that can haze or etch it over time. A properly sized frame holds the slab in place with a recessed cavity, not adhesive.

UV-Protective Acrylic

Sunlight is the enemy of holo foils and modern inks. UV-filtering acrylic glazing (not standard glass) blocks 98%+ of harmful rays while staying shatterproof — critical if you're shipping the framed piece or hanging it above a couch.

Ventilation Matters

Sealing a slab in a fully airtight display can trap humidity and cause fogging inside the case. Quality slab frames leave micro-ventilation channels behind the mat.

Installation Without Wall Damage

Use a single steel picture hook rated for the frame's weight (Grail Frames come in under 2 lbs, so a standard 5 lb hook is plenty). Level the frame with a small bubble level app before pressing the hook home.
